Anatomy of a Diamond
3.7.2025Which diamond colour should you choose?
Let’s take a look at diamond colour:
Both natural and lab-grown diamonds are gems that have won the hearts of millions of people around the world. Whether you long for a classic white brilliant or a rare coloured diamond, choosing the right one is key. In this article we will focus on diamond colour according to the internationally recognised GIA scale and explain what the “Fancy” label means for coloured diamonds.
What is the GIA colour scale and how is it determined?
The GIA (Gemological Institute of America) developed a standard scale for grading diamond colour, which is used worldwide today. This scale runs from the letter D (completely colourless) to Z (yellow or brown).
- D-F: These diamonds are considered colourless. They are very rare and the most valuable.
- G-J: Diamonds in this category are near colourless. They are very popular and offer a great price-to-quality ratio.
- K-M: These stones have a faint yellow tint (Faint Color).
- N-R: Diamonds with a more noticeable yellow tint (Very Light Color).
- S-Z: Strongly yellow or brown stones (Light Color).
The closer a diamond’s colour is to the letter D, the higher its value. This scale applies mainly to classic, colourless diamonds.
Why are coloured diamonds so rare?
Coloured diamonds, also known as Fancy Color Diamonds, make up less than 0.1% of all mined diamonds. Their colour arises from the presence of various chemical elements or distortions of the crystal lattice during their formation under enormous pressure and temperature.
- Blue diamonds: Their colour is caused by the presence of boron. They are extremely rare.
- Yellow diamonds: Coloured by the presence of a nitrogen atom.
- Pink and red diamonds: Formed by distortion of the crystal lattice, a very rare phenomenon. They are the most expensive and rarest diamonds in the world.
How are coloured diamonds graded? The Fancy scale
For coloured diamonds, the GIA D-Z scale is not used. Instead, the intensity of their colour is graded, which is the key factor in determining value. The scale for Fancy diamonds includes the following grades:
- Faint: A very faint hint of colour.
- Very Light: A very light hint of colour.
- Light: Light colouring.
- Fancy Light: Visible but subtle colour.
- Fancy: Pronounced, rich colour.
- Fancy Intense: Very rich and strong colour.
- Fancy Vivid: Maximum richness and vividness of colour. These diamonds are extremely rare.
- Fancy Deep/Fancy Dark: Deep or dark colour.
The price of a Fancy diamond increases with the intensity of its colour. Fancy Vivid and Fancy Intense diamonds are among the most valuable.
With us, choose colours ranging from the purest D colourless quality to champagne, blue, pink, green, yellow, black and red. Pick the colour that suits you, and don’t be afraid to ask. We are happy to prepare an offer for a specific colour to match your vision.
TIP: choose a coloured diamond from our 2026 collection, for example pear-shaped diamonds in pink.
Coloured lab-grown diamonds – affordable beauty
Thanks to technological progress, lab-grown diamonds now exist. These stones are physically, chemically and optically identical to natural diamonds, but are created in a controlled environment.
- Same properties, lower price: Lab-grown diamonds have the same brilliance, hardness and chemical composition as natural ones, but are significantly cheaper.
- Ethical and sustainable origin: They are created without mining, which eliminates the environmental impact and ethical issues associated with the mining industry.
If you long for a richly pink, blue, yellow or other Fancy diamond, lab-grown stones represent an affordable and ethical alternative.
Why choose a coloured diamond?
Coloured diamonds are not only an investment, but also an original way to express your personality and love! Whether you choose a natural stone with a history millions of years old, or a modern lab-grown diamond, its beauty and uniqueness will captivate you. Paired with a piece of jewellery, these coloured stones are just the thing for expressing your love to your partner. Every woman longs for beautiful jewellery that complements her inner beauty and the love she feels for her partner. Jewellery with a coloured diamond is also suitable for social occasions, as a fashion accessory.
Our tips for you:
- Set a budget: Fancy diamonds are rare and expensive. Lab-grown versions are a great alternative.
- Choose your colour: Think about which colour best expresses your personality.
- Look for certification: Always ask for a certificate confirming the diamond’s quality.
- Buy from a verified seller: Choose sellers who specialise in diamonds and offer quality service.
A lab-grown diamond is not only a modern and responsible choice, but also a quality investment in beauty without compromise. Knowing its anatomy, cuts and grading will help you choose and compare stones more effectively. Whether you’re looking for an engagement ring or an anniversary gift, a lab-grown diamond offers all the advantages of a natural stone – without its drawbacks.
