HPHT vs. CVD?
17.7.2024Fake diamonds. Do they exist, and what should you watch out for when buying?
Hello,
today we have prepared an interesting blog post on the topic of “fake diamonds” (or gemstones in general), since we too come across things that customers should watch out for, so that they don’t later regret their decision and money badly spent.
Right at the start, it needs to be said that there is no such thing as a fake diamond. There are only fraudsters who try to sell (or pass off) one product as something it isn’t. Unfortunately, there are many such sellers on the market, and they cast a very bad shadow over honest sellers who want only the best for their customers and invest a great deal of energy into their business. So what should you watch out for?
Although it may seem almost shocking, even large e-shops advertise a lab-grown diamond on their websites which is NOT a lab-grown diamond. In reality, it is moissanite, which is many times cheaper and has completely different properties compared to a lab-grown diamond (different hardness, birefringence, brilliance, and above all up to 200% more fire). We have even encountered a seller offering cubic zirconia as a lab-grown diamond! Our company has repeatedly notified these sellers that their websites mislead customers by selling them a different product than advertised (mainly sellers from Asia, but also European companies), which constitutes fraud. According to the customer support of these online sellers, it is not within their power to police this, and the matter was not pursued further. It is obvious that among the enormous number of listings, they are simply unable to tell whether someone is offering moissanite vs. a lab-grown diamond. There is also a basic lack of knowledge about this type of product, which is hard to hold against part-time customer support staff.
We would like to stress again that we are sharing this based on our own experience with one large online seller.
So how do you avoid this kind of purchase?
Every lab-grown diamond above approx. 4.50mm should have its own certificate number, which you can quickly verify yourself on the website of the laboratory that issued the certificate. Our recommendation is to buy lab-grown diamonds from companies that professionally deal in the sale of natural & lab-grown diamonds and can easily help you verify the gemstone on request. They will also advise you on the specifications of the diamond itself and help you choose the most suitable one for your needs.
Note:
If you are also buying natural diamonds, the seller should be able to measure, on request, whether the diamonds in, for example, your ring are actually natural, since small lab-grown diamonds do not have a laser inscription number on the girdle, and standard diamond testers also detect them simply as “diamond”. Special testers are therefore needed, ones that can already distinguish a lab-grown diamond from a natural one.
We have a selection of more than 50,000!! diamonds for you to choose from, so we firmly believe we will find the right diamond for you. We actively monitor our competitors’ prices and can say that we offer both lab-grown and natural diamonds at the best prices on the market.
If you are still undecided, send us an inquiry and we will promptly send you an offer you can compare with no obligation.
We look forward to hearing from you soon!
