7 Reasons to Choose a Lab-Grown Diamond
9.10.2023How to Choose a Lab-Grown Diamond?
A simple question, and the answer isn’t complicated either. Thanks to their affordability, lab-grown diamonds open up entirely new possibilities when it comes to choice.
1) Weight | Size (Carat)
Diamonds are measured in carats (1g = 0.2ct). The size of the stone also plays a key role in how much brilliance the diamond will have, and we recommend choosing diamonds from around 0.3ct (approx. 4.50mm, depending on the cut) upwards, which is what we offer. The truly perfect stone size falls between 0.80 – 1.50ct, but this ultimately depends on each individual customer. What feels too large for one person may feel too small for another, so we leave it up to you to judge the right size of lab-grown diamond.
2) Colour
Here the recommendation is clear: “colourless”. Colour, together with the cut, is one of the two key factors in choosing a diamond. Diamonds are graded according to the 4C’s (colour, cut, clarity, carat) and colour is rated on a scale from D to Z, where D is a perfectly colourless gem and each following letter represents one grade worse. The colourless category covers the letters D | E | F. Lab-grown diamonds generally have better colour than natural ones, so they are often available even in these premium colours, while average natural diamonds on the market reach only G-H.
3) Clarity
The internal inclusions in a diamond can be thought of as its fingerprint. Every stone has slightly different inclusions, in different positions and of different sizes. Lab-grown diamonds are cleaner than natural ones. Inclusions affect the refraction of light within the diamond, which is why we recommend sticking to the clarity grades IF, VVS1, VVS2, VS1. Everything else is, in our view, a below-average clarity grade.
4) Cut
The cut is the very magic that turns a raw grey piece of stone into a beautiful, sparkling diamond. Cuts also have their own grading, which you’ll find on the diamond’s certificate alongside the other 4C parameters. If a gem is poorly cut but has the best-rated colour (D) and clarity (IF), it still loses value, because nobody wants a stone that doesn’t sparkle. We recommend sticking strictly to the top-rated cuts: IDEAL, Excellent, Very Good. The ideal combination is Ideal | Excellent | Excellent or 3x Excellent.
