How do you verify a lab-grown diamond and its characteristics?

Let us go through, step by step, how easily you can check the specification of an IGI-certified lab-grown diamond.

By way of illustration we have chosen a 1.27ct lab-grown diamond of E colour and VVS1 clarity with an Ideal-Ex-Ex cut grade, IGI LG681520146. You will find this number either on the IGI certificate itself or on the girdle of the diamond. You will need a loupe and a little patience, as the inscription is very small indeed. What is more, we set our lab-grown diamonds so that the claws do not cover the number, allowing it to be checked even once the diamond has been set in a piece of jewellery.

Where will you find the unique number of a lab-grown diamond?

  • on the IGI certificate supplied with every lab-grown diamond of 0.50ct and above that we sell
  • on the girdle of the diamond

Enter the unique number in the "Report number" field. You can go to www.igi.org, where you will find the "Verify report" field in the top right-hand corner, or you can click the link below to go straight to the Verify Your Report section (see image), where you enter the diamond’s number.

A window then opens showing the lab-grown diamond’s certificate. For some stones, chiefly the larger ones, the inclusions and their positions are plotted as well. At high clarity grades you may again need to look quite closely to find the inclusions – see the image below.
